The SPIKE Tool is a safety device used to keep electrical workers safe. SPIKE pierces the neutral or sheath of a cable, as well as its insulation, to reach the main conductor. If the cable is powered prior to cutting, an arcing fault is caused by breaking down the insulation.
Spiking is used to ensure that the cable is not live. Cables should be spiked using cable spiking equipment after positive MV-HV cable identification to confirm the circuit is not Live at HV — cables are frequently preliminarily spiked to enable jointing or terminating of faulty 11kV/33kV cables.
